boyd-cantenac-1975
Chateau Boyd-Cantenac Margaux 1975 AOC 0,75l

Boyd-Cantenac is one of the smallest classed growths in Margaux — around eighteen hectares of gravel at Cantenac, and no grand house to go with it. The estate was split from its neighbour Cantenac-Brown in the nineteenth century, and since 1932 it has belonged to the Guillemet family, who make the wine at Château Pouget a few hundred metres down the road.

1975 is the vintage that divides Bordeaux drinkers. After a run of wet, disappointing years came a hot, dry summer and a small crop, and the wines were built on tannin at a scale nobody had seen since 1961. Some never softened. The ones that did are still standing half a century later, and a Margaux from this year is firm and structured by nature rather than plump.

The fill on this bottle has held at the base of the neck, which for a 1975 is about as good as you will find. A serious, unfashionable classed growth from a serious year.

Producer: Château Boyd-Cantenac

Vintage: 1975

Appellation: Margaux AOC

Format: 75cl

Region: Bordeaux, France

Style: Red

Where it is likely to be now. The tannins of 1975 mean better bottles are still standing and the base-of-neck fill is encouraging, but at fifty-one years nothing can be promised.

Who it suits. For someone turning fifty-one in 2026 who would rather receive a proper classed growth than a famous label stretched thin.

Condition. Good label, and the wine still reaches the base of the neck — the highest fill you realistically see on a bottle from the 1970s.

Provenance. Bought to order from a professional European merchant.
