The 1967 vintage, rated

Sgt. Pepper, and a great Sauternes

In 2026 a bottle from 1967 marks a 59th birthday or anniversary

The vintage

Good · 3/5

A big crop of soft, early-drinking claret that was charming at ten years old and is mostly finished now, the Médoc especially. Two exceptions matter a great deal. Sauternes 1967 is one of the greatest sweet-wine vintages of the century, with a landmark Yquem, and Pomerol did well. Fonseca and a small handful of others declared Port.

What we would buy, and why

Go straight to Sauternes and do not look back: a 1967 Climens, Suduiraut or Rieussec is deep amber, still bright with acidity and costs €200-400, with Yquem several times that. Sweet wine also survives an imperfect cellar far better than red does, so the risk of opening a disappointment is materially lower. Treat any 1967 Médoc as a decorative bottle rather than something to drink, and price it accordingly.

1967 in the world

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was released on 1 June and more or less took over the summer. In December, in Cape Town, Christiaan Barnard performed the first human heart transplant.

Best bets for 1967

  • Château Suduiraut, Rieussec or Climens 1967 Sauternes - the wine of the year by a distance
  • Château d'Yquem 1967 for a milestone occasion; expect four figures
  • Fonseca 1967 Vintage Port, one of the very few houses to declare
  • Trotanoy or Vieux Château Certan 1967 from Pomerol, if it has to be red

How we grade a bottle

Fill level, label, capsule and cork, then provenance. Every bottle is checked by hand by people who have handled thousands of old bottles, and we write down the flaws as well as the good news. What the fill levels mean · How to choose a birth-year wine
