Forty in 2026 is a birth year of 1986. Forty years married is a ruby wedding and a wedding in 1986. This is also the first decade recent enough that the person opening the box is likely to recognise the names on the labels.

1982 is the vintage that changed how the world buys Bordeaux, a hot year of rich, immediately likeable wines that turned into a market of its own. 1985 was lovely in Burgundy and very fine in Piedmont. 1986 gave the Médoc a firmer, more classical year, and 1988 and 1989 set up the run into 1990. Champagne was declared in 1985 and 1988, and Port in 1983 and 1985.

Bottles made before 1990 are sold as collectible items, without a guarantee of drinkability. Forty years is long enough for a cork to fail quietly, and no photograph will show that.
