Write to us about anything. A bottle you have seen here. A year that does not appear on the site. A present you have three weeks to decide on and no idea where to begin. Whatever you send, someone reads it and writes back, usually within one working day and rarely longer than two. There is no chatbot standing in front of us, and no ticket number to quote back at anybody.

A real person, not a form

We are a small team, so you will usually deal with the same person from your first question to the day the parcel is delivered. That suits the work. A 1966 Barolo bought for someone's sixtieth birthday is not a transaction that benefits from being passed between departments, and the details tend to matter: who it is for, whether it will be opened, what the year is meant to say. Tell one of us and you have told all of us.

If a question needs a proper answer rather than a fast one, we would rather take a few extra hours and get it right. You will always hear back either way.

Ask us about a year

Send us the year, plus the producer or the region if you have one in mind, and we will tell you what exists and what it costs. Some years are easy. Others take a little longer. A small number are genuinely difficult, and in those cases we will say so rather than steer you towards a bottle you did not want. An honest we cannot find that one is worth more to us than a sale.

It is also worth knowing that the same year behaves differently from region to region. A year that was thin in Bordeaux may have been very good in Piedmont, and Champagne is only declared as a vintage in the years a house thinks are worth it. If your year turns out to be an awkward one in the region you had in mind, we will tell you where else that year did well, and what it would cost.

Photographs and a condition report

Old bottles are individual objects. Two bottles of the same wine from the same year can differ in fill level, in how the label has weathered, in the state of the capsule and the wax. So before you order, or after, ask us for photographs of the actual bottle. We will send them, along with a written note on its condition and where it has come from. No one has to press us for that. It is simply how we would want to buy something that has survived sixty years in someone else's cellar.

Delivery takes 7 to 10 working days, tracked. One thing we would rather say up front than bury in the small print: bottles older than 1990 are sold as collectible objects, without a guarantee that they will be good to drink. Decades in a cellar do unpredictable things, and no seller who is being straight with you can promise otherwise. You should know that from us, in writing, before you spend the money.

If you are not sure what to give

A great many people write to us with very little to go on, and that is a perfectly good place to start. A year and a budget is enough. Send us 1978, around €200, for my father and we will come back with two or three bottles and a sentence on each, saying why we think it fits. If you can tell us more, better still: whether it is likely to be opened or kept, whether the person leans towards red or white, whether the occasion calls for something grand or something quieter.

We will also tell you when a different year makes the better present. Sometimes a wedding year lands more warmly than a birth year. Sometimes a budget goes considerably further a year to either side, and the bottle you end up with is the one you would rather have given. That advice costs nothing and comes with no obligation to buy.

What helps us answer quickly

• The year. If there are two possible years, give us both.
• A budget, even a rough one. It spares you reading about bottles you would never buy.
• The date you need it by, and the country it is going to.
• Anything you know about the person: what they drink, and whether the bottle is for opening or for keeping.
• Whether you want photographs first. Say so and we will send them before you decide.

None of it is compulsory. A one-line email is still welcome, and we will ask if we need more.

Who you are writing to

ANNO is a brand of Sottocolle S.r.l.s., an Italian company, and the bottles are checked and shipped from Europe. Emails, calls and chat messages are answered Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 18:00 CET. Anything that arrives over the weekend is picked up on Monday morning, and on Italian public holidays you may wait a day longer than usual, for which we apologise in advance.
