The vintage

Modest · 2/5

Poor in Bordeaux, one of the wettest and most diluted years of the decade, and those wines were tired twenty years ago. Piedmont was rained on as well and many good producers declassified. Portugal is the saving grace: Taylor's and Fonseca declared 1992 rather than 1991, and Taylor's 1992 is one of the finest Ports of the era. California, meanwhile, had an excellent year.

What we would buy, and why

Go straight to Port. Taylor's 1992 gets you a bottle that is great rather than merely old, and it is young for a vintage Port. If the budget is tighter, a 1992 Armagnac does the same job for around 100 euro. Refuse any 1992 Bordeaux, however grand the chateau, because you would be paying for the name and pouring something hollow.

1992 in the world

On 3 December an engineer sent the first text message, which read simply "Merry Christmas". That summer Barcelona hosted the Olympics and rebuilt its seafront around them.

Best bets for 1992

  • Taylor's 1992 Vintage Port - the outstanding wine of the year, roughly 180-260 euro
  • Fonseca 1992 Vintage Port - richer and rounder, 150-220 euro
  • Ridge Monte Bello 1992, Santa Cruz Mountains - California had a fine year while Europe drowned, 300-450 euro
  • A 1992 vintage Armagnac - 90-130 euro

How we grade a bottle

Fill level, label, capsule and cork, then provenance. Every bottle is checked by hand by people who have handled thousands of old bottles, and we write down the flaws as well as the good news. What the fill levels mean · How to choose a birth-year wine
