The vintage

Good · 3/5

September rain undid a promising Bordeaux summer, and the wines came out lean and hard; the Medoc did better than Pomerol, but nothing here justifies a large cheque. Burgundy is the opposite story - 1993 is one of the better red Burgundy years of the decade, firm and long-lived, and good Cote de Nuits bottles are drinking well now. Champagne declared 1993, and those wines have aged gracefully.

What we would buy, and why

Treat this as a Burgundy or Champagne year and not a Bordeaux one. With Burgundy the grower's name matters far more than the village on the label, so buy a producer with a real reputation for the vintage rather than an appellation you happen to recognise. Expect around 200 euro and upwards for a red Burgundy worth opening; below that, a 1993 Champagne or an Armagnac from the year is the better use of the money.

1993 in the world

Buckingham Palace opened its State Rooms to the public for the first time that August, and Jurassic Park filled cinemas all summer.

How we grade a bottle

Fill level, label, capsule and cork, then provenance. Every bottle is checked by hand by people who have handled thousands of old bottles, and we write down the flaws as well as the good news. What the fill levels mean · How to choose a birth-year wine
