The vintage

Excellent · 4/5

The first properly good Bordeaux since 1990. A hot summer and a dry September gave well-structured wines, with Pomerol and St-Emilion especially strong; they were tannic in youth and have come round nicely. Burgundy was very good, Sauternes made fine botrytised wines, and Champagne declared a solid vintage. Piedmont was decent rather than memorable.

What we would buy, and why

You can buy Bordeaux with confidence here, and a good classed growth is the natural gift. There is enough 1995 about that you can afford to be fussy, so hold out for a clean label, a fill in the neck and a merchant who will tell you where the bottle has been stored. Around 200 to 300 euro buys a very good St-Julien or Pomerol, and there is no need to reach for first-growth money to impress.

1995 in the world

Toy Story arrived in November as the first feature film animated entirely by computer. That August, Blur and Oasis went head to head for the number one single and the whole country picked a side.
