The 2007 vintage, rated

A great year in the Rhône and the Douro

In 2026 a bottle from 2007 marks a 19th birthday or anniversary

The vintage

Good · 3/5

Bordeaux had a cold, wet summer and made light wines meant to be drunk young; the dry whites and Sauternes are the exception and are very good. Burgundy is delicate in red and excellent in white. The southern Rhône had one of its finest vintages in memory - Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2007 is opulent and long-lived - and every Port house declared 2007, a classic year.

What we would buy, and why

Skip red Bordeaux unless the bottle is a white or a Sauternes, and go where the year was strong: a Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2007 is a generous, ready bottle for a nineteenth birthday, and a 2007 Vintage Port is the one to buy for someone who will keep it. White Burgundy 2007 is fresh and precise if it has been stored well - ask.

2007 in the world

The first iPhone went on sale in June. In July the last Harry Potter book sold eleven million copies in its first twenty-four hours.

Best bets for 2007

  • Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2007 - one of the southern Rhône's great modern years
  • Vintage Port 2007 - a universal declaration, still young
  • Sauternes 2007 - a fine year for sweet Bordeaux
  • White Burgundy 2007 - fresh and precise, from a good cellar

How we grade a bottle

Fill level, label, capsule and cork, then provenance. Every bottle is checked by hand by people who have handled thousands of old bottles, and we write down the flaws as well as the good news. What the fill levels mean · How to choose a birth-year wine
