The vintage

Legendary · 5/5

A warm, sunny year that made ripe, generous wines almost everywhere. Bordeaux 2009 is one of the great modern vintages, opulent on both banks and in Sauternes. Red Burgundy is rich and charming, the northern Rhône excellent, and Piedmont, Tuscany, Rioja and Germany all made very good wine. Champagne is good rather than great.

What we would buy, and why

This is a year you can buy with confidence for a seventeenth birthday and open now or later. Bordeaux 2009 is showy enough to please anyone at the table and will improve for years; a Côte-Rôtie or Hermitage 2009 is the choice for someone who likes Syrah. Because the vintage is famous, prices are firm - a good second wine or a lesser appellation from a top producer gives the year without the premium.

2009 in the world

In January a US Airways jet landed safely on the Hudson River after losing both engines to a flock of geese. The same month the first block of the Bitcoin network was mined, and almost nobody noticed.

Best bets for 2009

  • Classed-growth Bordeaux 2009 - opulent and long-lived, from either bank
  • Red Burgundy 2009 - ripe, charming and drinking well
  • Northern Rhône 2009 - excellent Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage
  • Sauternes 2009 - rich and concentrated

How we grade a bottle

Fill level, label, capsule and cork, then provenance. Every bottle is checked by hand by people who have handled thousands of old bottles, and we write down the flaws as well as the good news. What the fill levels mean · How to choose a birth-year wine
