The vintage

Legendary · 5/5

A cool, dry year that produced structured, long-lived wines of the highest class. Bordeaux 2010 is powerful and tannic and will outlive most of us; Burgundy is superb in both colours; the Rhône is excellent north and south; Barolo 2010 is a reference vintage and Brunello 2010 among the best ever made. Rioja and Germany were also very good. Champagne was the one region that struggled.

What we would buy, and why

For a sixteenth birthday, or anyone born in 2010, this is as good as a modern year gets, and the wines are built to last - choose it for a bottle that will still be improving at twenty-one. Barolo 2010 and Brunello 2010 are the sure things; Bordeaux at this level still wants a decanter and time. Prices reflect the reputation, so the real value is in a good producer's lesser wine rather than a big name's grand vin.

2010 in the world

In April the ash cloud from the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull closed most of Europe's airspace for six days. In October thirty-three Chilean miners were brought to the surface after sixty-nine days underground.

Best bets for 2010

  • Barolo 2010 - a reference vintage for Piedmont
  • Brunello di Montalcino 2010 - one of Tuscany's greatest years
  • Classed-growth Bordeaux 2010 - built for decades
  • Red or white Burgundy 2010 - superb in both colours

How we grade a bottle

Fill level, label, capsule and cork, then provenance. Every bottle is checked by hand by people who have handled thousands of old bottles, and we write down the flaws as well as the good news. What the fill levels mean · How to choose a birth-year wine
