Frost in the spring, charm in the glass

In 2026 a bottle from 2017 marks a 9th birthday or anniversary

The vintage

Good · 3/5

Severe April frost cut the crop in Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne. What was made is good rather than great: Bordeaux is classic and best on the top gravel terroirs, Burgundy is charming and open in red and generous in white. Piedmont and Tuscany were hot and early. The Douro declared 2017 alongside 2016, a rare back-to-back declaration, and Germany made fine wines.

What we would buy, and why

For a ninth birthday, choose a good name rather than a famous region: the top Bordeaux estates and the best Burgundy growers made lovely 2017s, and the wines are drinking well now. A 2017 Vintage Port is the one to put away.

2017 in the world

In August a total solar eclipse crossed the United States from coast to coast. In September the Cassini spacecraft ended its mission by flying into Saturn after thirteen years in orbit.

Best bets for 2017

  • Top-estate Bordeaux 2017 - classic, from the best terroirs
  • White Burgundy 2017 - generous and open
  • Vintage Port 2017 - a rare back-to-back declaration
  • German Riesling 2017 - fine and precise

How we grade a bottle

Fill level, label, capsule and cork, then provenance. Every bottle is checked by hand by people who have handled thousands of old bottles, and we write down the flaws as well as the good news. What the fill levels mean · How to choose a birth-year wine
