The 2023 vintage, rated

A big harvest, uneven results

In 2026 a bottle from 2023 marks a 3rd birthday or anniversary

The vintage

Good · 3/5

A large crop after a wet spring, with mildew pressure and a heatwave at harvest. Bordeaux 2023 is good and variable; the best estates made fresh, balanced wines. Burgundy had a generous crop with very good whites. Champagne was abundant and good, Germany very good, the Rhône good. Piedmont is good, Tuscany mixed.

What we would buy, and why

For a third birthday, stay with producers who select hard: a top Bordeaux or Burgundy estate made good 2023s. White Burgundy 2023 and Champagne 2023 are safe, cheerful choices. This is a year to buy on the name rather than the region.

2023 in the world

In May Charles III was crowned at Westminster Abbey. In August India's Chandrayaan-3 landed near the south pole of the Moon, the first spacecraft to do so.

Best bets for 2023

  • Top-estate Bordeaux 2023 - fresh and balanced from the best
  • White Burgundy 2023 - generous and good
  • Champagne 2023 - abundant, good
  • German Riesling 2023 - very good

How we grade a bottle

Fill level, label, capsule and cork, then provenance. Every bottle is checked by hand by people who have handled thousands of old bottles, and we write down the flaws as well as the good news. What the fill levels mean · How to choose a birth-year wine
