The vintage

Good · 3/5

A drought year that was praised at the time and has divided people ever since — the tannins in most 1975 Médocs never softened, and plenty of those wines are still dry and severe. Pomerol was the exception and made genuinely great wine. Sauternes had one of its best years of the century, and those sweet wines are superb.

What we would buy, and why

Go for Sauternes. A 1975 Sauternes or Barsac is deep amber by now, tastes of marmalade and barley sugar, and is far more likely to be in good condition than a red of the same age; €150–300 buys a very good one. If it has to be red, pay for Pomerol and skip the Médoc, where 1975 remains a lottery even from famous châteaux.

1975 in the world

Bohemian Rhapsody was released in October 1975: nearly six minutes long, no chorus, and the Christmas number one.

Best bets for 1975

  • Château Climens or Château Suduiraut 1975 — €150–300, and an easy wine to love
  • Château Rieussec 1975 — about €180–300
  • Château d'Yquem 1975 for a milestone — €600–1,000, and one of the great Yquems
  • Château Trotanoy or Vieux Château Certan 1975 if the gift must be a red

How we grade a bottle

Fill level, label, capsule and cork, then provenance. Every bottle is checked by hand by people who have handled thousands of old bottles, and we write down the flaws as well as the good news. What the fill levels mean · How to choose a birth-year wine
