Les Forts de Latour is not an ordinary second wine. Latour created it in 1966 and did not release the first vintage until 1972, and it draws on named parcels the estate owns outside the walled Enclos around the tower — chiefly Comtesse de Lalande and Petit Batailley — along with vats from younger vines in the main vineyard that do not make the grand vin.
In 1975 Latour was in British hands. The Pearson group had taken control in 1963 and had already installed the stainless steel fermentation vats that scandalised traditional Bordeaux. The estate's reputation for making the most durable wine in the Médoc was well earned, and a hot, dry, small and severely tannic vintage played directly to that strength.
For a Pauillac carrying the Latour name and a fifty-one-year-old date on the label, this remains one of the more sensible ways in — the same cellar, the same year, without a four-figure price.
