The vintage

Modest · 2/5

Bordeaux had a cold, damp summer and a late harvest interrupted by rain, so the reds came out lean and most have now faded. Sauternes did far better, with genuine botrytis, and the Douro declared a full Port vintage across every major house. Piedmont made honest, classical Barolo, and the Côte de Nuits quietly produced reds that have aged better than anyone predicted at the time.

What we would buy, and why

Leave red Bordeaux alone at this age unless it is a first growth with a documented cellar history, and even then expect something delicate rather than grand. The money goes much further on 1980 vintage Port, which was declared by everyone and is drinking beautifully, or on a Sauternes. Budget €150 to €350 for good Port; a 1980 claret offered at under €80 is priced as a curiosity, not as a drink.

1980 in the world

Pac-Man appeared in Japanese arcades in May and The Empire Strikes Back opened a fortnight later. It was also the year the Rubik's Cube went on sale outside Hungary and began its takeover of the world's coffee tables.

Best bets for 1980

  • Taylor's or Graham's 1980 Vintage Port, declared by every major house and still fresh
  • Château Suduiraut or Rieussec 1980 Sauternes, the quiet success of the year
  • Château d'Yquem 1980 if the budget stretches to the top of the vintage
  • Barolo 1980 from a traditional house such as Borgogno or Marcarini

How we grade a bottle

Fill level, label, capsule and cork, then provenance. Every bottle is checked by hand by people who have handled thousands of old bottles, and we write down the flaws as well as the good news. What the fill levels mean · How to choose a birth-year wine
