A great year in Burgundy and the Rhône

In 2026 a bottle from 2015 marks a 11th birthday or anniversary

The vintage

Legendary · 5/5

A hot, dry summer and a well-timed September. Red Burgundy 2015 is outstanding, ripe and deep; the northern Rhône made some of its greatest wines, Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage above all. Bordeaux is excellent, best in Margaux, Pessac-Léognan and on the Right Bank. Brunello 2015 is superb, Barolo very good, Germany and the Loire exceptional. Champagne was warm and uneven.

What we would buy, and why

An eleventh-birthday bottle from 2015 can be almost anything red and it will be good, but Burgundy and the northern Rhône are where the year was truly great. Both will keep for decades, so this is a year to lay down as well as to drink. Margaux or Pomerol 2015 is the Bordeaux choice.

2015 in the world

In July NASA's New Horizons probe flew past Pluto and sent back the first close pictures of it. In December 195 countries signed the Paris climate agreement.

Best bets for 2015

  • Red Burgundy 2015 - outstanding, ripe and deep
  • Côte-Rôtie or Hermitage 2015 - among the northern Rhône's greatest years
  • Margaux or Pomerol 2015 - the best of Bordeaux that year
  • Brunello di Montalcino 2015 - superb

How we grade a bottle

Fill level, label, capsule and cork, then provenance. Every bottle is checked by hand by people who have handled thousands of old bottles, and we write down the flaws as well as the good news. What the fill levels mean · How to choose a birth-year wine
