A hot, dry summer and a well-timed September. Red Burgundy 2015 is outstanding, ripe and deep; the northern Rhône made some of its greatest wines, Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage above all. Bordeaux is excellent, best in Margaux, Pessac-Léognan and on the Right Bank. Brunello 2015 is superb, Barolo very good, Germany and the Loire exceptional. Champagne was warm and uneven.

An eleventh-birthday bottle from 2015 can be almost anything red and it will be good, but Burgundy and the northern Rhône are where the year was truly great. Both will keep for decades, so this is a year to lay down as well as to drink. Margaux or Pomerol 2015 is the Bordeaux choice.
