Heat and drought, and a surprise

In 2026 a bottle from 2022 marks a 4th birthday or anniversary

The vintage

Legendary · 5/5

A summer of heat and drought that should have made heavy wines and instead produced balance. Bordeaux 2022 is outstanding, fresh despite the year. Burgundy is excellent with a healthy crop, Champagne very good and widely declared, the Rhône very good. Piedmont and Tuscany were hot and dry; the best producers made good wine.

What we would buy, and why

For a fourth birthday, Bordeaux 2022 is the pick - a great year whose bottles will be at their best when the child is grown. Burgundy 2022 is a fine, more approachable choice. Champagne 2022 will be a festive bottle for years.

2022 in the world

In July the James Webb Space Telescope sent back its first images of the deep universe. In September Queen Elizabeth II died after seventy years on the throne, and in December Argentina won the World Cup in Qatar.

Best bets for 2022

  • Classed-growth Bordeaux 2022 - outstanding
  • Red or white Burgundy 2022 - excellent, plentiful
  • Vintage Champagne 2022 - very good, widely declared
  • Northern Rhône 2022 - very good

How we grade a bottle

Fill level, label, capsule and cork, then provenance. Every bottle is checked by hand by people who have handled thousands of old bottles, and we write down the flaws as well as the good news. What the fill levels mean · How to choose a birth-year wine
