A summer of heat and drought that should have made heavy wines and instead produced balance. Bordeaux 2022 is outstanding, fresh despite the year. Burgundy is excellent with a healthy crop, Champagne very good and widely declared, the Rhône very good. Piedmont and Tuscany were hot and dry; the best producers made good wine.

What we would buy, and why

For a fourth birthday, Bordeaux 2022 is the pick - a great year whose bottles will be at their best when the child is grown. Burgundy 2022 is a fine, more approachable choice. Champagne 2022 will be a festive bottle for years.

2022 in the world

In July the James Webb Space Telescope sent back its first images of the deep universe. In September Queen Elizabeth II died after seventy years on the throne, and in December Argentina won the World Cup in Qatar.
