A hard year for growers

The vintage

Modest · 2/5

Rain, mildew and a cool summer made 2024 a small, difficult harvest across most of France. Bordeaux is light and classic at best, from the estates that could afford to sort ruthlessly; Burgundy lost much of its crop and the whites are the stronger side. Champagne was tiny. Italy fared better, with sound, fresh wines in Piedmont and Tuscany. Germany was variable.

What we would buy, and why

For a second birthday, the honest advice is to buy the producer, not the year: a top estate's 2024 will be good and scarce. Italy is the safer region. Or choose the bottle for the child's future - a Vintage Port or a Sauternes from a better year, put aside for the twenty-first.

2024 in the world

In April a total solar eclipse crossed Mexico, the United States and Canada. Paris hosted the Olympic Games in the summer, and in December Notre-Dame reopened five years after the fire.

Best bets for 2024

  • Top-estate Bordeaux 2024 - small and strictly sorted
  • White Burgundy 2024 - the stronger side of a hard year
  • Italian whites and early reds 2024 - sound and fresh
  • A great earlier year set aside for the twenty-first

How we grade a bottle

Fill level, label, capsule and cork, then provenance. Every bottle is checked by hand by people who have handled thousands of old bottles, and we write down the flaws as well as the good news. What the fill levels mean · How to choose a birth-year wine
