Rain, mildew and a cool summer made 2024 a small, difficult harvest across most of France. Bordeaux is light and classic at best, from the estates that could afford to sort ruthlessly; Burgundy lost much of its crop and the whites are the stronger side. Champagne was tiny. Italy fared better, with sound, fresh wines in Piedmont and Tuscany. Germany was variable.

For a second birthday, the honest advice is to buy the producer, not the year: a top estate's 2024 will be good and scarce. Italy is the safer region. Or choose the bottle for the child's future - a Vintage Port or a Sauternes from a better year, put aside for the twenty-first.
