A hot, dry season with a small crop of concentrated grapes. The first reports from Bordeaux and Burgundy are promising - ripe fruit with good freshness - though the wines are still in barrel and it is early to judge. Italy had a warm, healthy year. Most 2025 wines will only reach the shelves from 2027.

What we would buy, and why

For a first birthday there is little 2025 in bottle yet beyond early-release wines. The sensible gift is a bottle to keep: a Vintage Port or Sauternes from a great year, or a 2025 reserved as it is released. Ask us and we will look.

In May Robert Prevost was elected Pope Leo XIV, the first pope from the United States. The year's harvest came in early after a hot, dry summer across much of Europe.
