The vintage

The 2026 grapes are being picked as this is written, so there is no verdict yet and no wine in bottle. A child born this year will have a vintage of their own from 2027 onwards; until then the year exists only in the vineyard.

What we would buy, and why

For a birth in 2026 the gift is a promise: a bottle from this year will start to appear in 2027, and the serious ones in 2028 and 2029. Meanwhile a great earlier year - a Vintage Port, a Sauternes, a Barolo - put aside for the twenty-first is the classic choice, and we can look for a 2026 once it is bottled.

2026 in the world

Milan and Cortina hosted the Winter Olympics in February. In the summer the World Cup was played across the United States, Canada and Mexico for the first time.
