This is the second wine of Château Beychevelle, the Saint-Julien estate whose long, low château faces the Gironde. Second wines are made from the parcels and vats that do not go into the main label, usually younger vines, and are bottled under a separate name. They are a more affordable way to own a real bottle from a serious address in a given year, and worth understanding before you buy.

The Admiral in question is the Duc d'Épernon, Grand Admiral of France in the sixteenth century, whose home this was. Passing boats were expected to lower their sails in salute, and the name Beychevelle is said to come from that gesture; a ship under sail has been the estate's emblem ever since.

1983 was a fair rather than famous year in Saint-Julien. Four decades on, a second wine of this age is a delicate thing. It was never built to last as long as it has, which is part of what makes it interesting. Treat it as a piece of 1983.

Where it is likely to be now. A second wine of this age is genuinely fragile — it was made to be drunk within about a decade — so any life left in it should be counted as a bonus rather than an expectation.

Who it suits. A sensible present for a forty-third birthday where the point is the year rather than the grandeur, and the story of the lowered sails makes it easy to explain over dinner.

Condition. The holding merchant rates the condition good, with label and capsule intact and normal cellar wear; because only one bottle exists we re-check it individually before the bottle ships.

Provenance. Bought to order from a professional European merchant. We check fill, label and capsule when the bottle reaches us and photograph it before it ships.

Delivered in 7 to 10 working days, tracked. Transit cover can be added at checkout.

Sold as a collectible item, as seen. No guarantee is given on drinkability.
