Croizet-Bages has no château building at all. The vineyard sits on the Bages plateau just south of Pauillac village, beside far more famous neighbours in Lynch-Bages and Grand-Puy-Lacoste, and the wine has been made in borrowed cellars for most of its modern life. It was classified a fifth growth in 1855 and has stayed there ever since.
This is the honest end of classified Pauillac: Cabernet Sauvignon on deep gravel, with no ambition to be anything other than claret. In 1964, a year that punished anyone who picked after the October rain, the wine was never built for the long haul. What remains after sixty-two years is a survivor rather than a showpiece.
The appeal of a bottle like this is the date on it and the fact that it still exists. It is priced accordingly: a real classified-growth Pauillac from a specific autumn, not a trophy.
