Giscours is one of the largest estates in Margaux, a third growth on the gravel of Labarde with a park, a lake and a well-known polo field attached to it. Under Nicolas Tari it produced some of the most dependable Margaux of the seventies and early eighties — firm and structured, more Médoc in character than overtly perfumed — before a harder period later in the decade.
1982 caught the property in good health. The heat of that summer and the speed of the harvest gave Giscours an unusual richness for an estate of its size, and the wine has been drinking well for a very long time without falling apart along the way.
Expect a claret at full maturity: brick red at the rim, dried blackcurrant, tobacco and damp earth, with the softness that only decades in glass will produce. At this price it is one of the more approachable ways to hand somebody a bottle from the year they were born.

Where it is likely to be now. Comfortably mature and unlikely to gain anything from further keeping, and offered — as all pre-1990 bottles are — as a collectible item without a guarantee of drinkability.
Who it suits. A classified Margaux for under two hundred and fifty euro, which makes it a sound forty-fourth birthday present in 2026 when 1982 is the point rather than the pedigree.
Condition. The merchant notes the label as slightly damaged, meaning some scuffing or staining from cellar storage; it has no bearing on the wine sealed inside.
