Le roi des vins, le vin des rois — the king of wines, the wine of kings — has been painted up at Gruaud-Larose for generations, and for a Second Growth with more than eighty hectares in a single block behind Saint-Julien it is not entirely bluster. In 1980 the estate belonged to the Cordier family, owners since 1917, who had made it one of the most consistent names on the Left Bank.
Now the honest part about the vintage. 1980 was a cold, wet, difficult year in Bordeaux, harvested very late from a small crop. The wines came out light and for early drinking, and nobody laid them down expecting greatness.
Which is rather the point of a bottle like this one. It survives because it is 1980 — somebody's year — and because it is a real classified growth rather than an anonymous bottle with the right number on it.

Where it is likely to be now. 1980 was a light vintage and this is well past its drinking window, so treat it as a collectible item tied to the year rather than as a bottle you expect to pour with confidence.
Who it suits. Aimed squarely at a 1980 birth year — a 46th birthday in 2026 — where the value lies in the date and the classified-growth name on the label.
Condition. The label is in good order and the fill sits between top and very top shoulder, which is better than most surviving bottles from this difficult vintage.
Provenance. Bought to order from a professional European merchant. We check fill, label and capsule when the bottle reaches us and photograph it before it ships.
Delivered in 7 to 10 working days, tracked. Transit cover can be added at checkout.
Sold as a collectible item, as seen. No guarantee is given on drinkability.
