The 1964 harvest divided Bordeaux in two. Rain arrived in early October and drowned the Médoc estates still waiting on their Cabernet; Haut-Brion, on warmer gravel south of the city, had already finished picking. It made one of the wines of the year rather than one of its casualties.
Haut-Brion is the oldest of the great Bordeaux properties and the only château outside the Médoc written into the 1855 classification. Its vineyard sits inside the suburbs of Bordeaux at Pessac, on deep gravel banks that ripen fruit ahead of the communes to the north. The house style is recognisable to anyone who drinks these wines: warm brick, tobacco leaf, hot stones, a savoury edge rather than a sweet one.
A bottle from 1964 has lain still for six decades while almost everything made alongside it was drunk. Very few survive, and fewer still come out of a professional cellar with paperwork behind them.

Where it is likely to be now. Fully mature and past its peak, but 1964 was a strong year for this estate and a sound bottle should still be showing cedar, earth and dried fruit rather than nothing at all.
