For much of the 1960s and 1970s La Lagune was run by Jeanne Boyrie, who took over the winemaking after her husband died and became one of the first women to hold that job in the Médoc. The property had been close to ruined after the war and was replanted almost from scratch at the end of the 1950s, so the 1970 comes from a vineyard brought back by a small and determined team.
La Lagune is the southernmost classed growth of the Médoc, sitting among pine woods at Ludon on the edge of Bordeaux itself. Its wine is a third growth, softer and more open-textured than the Pauillacs to the north, with a sweetness of fruit that comes from a good measure of Merlot alongside the Cabernets.
1970 gave Bordeaux an unusually generous and even harvest. This bottle has now carried that year for over half a century.
