The fill on this bottle is into the neck. On a claret of forty-five years that is about as good as you will ever see, and it tells you more about how the wine has been kept than any paperwork could.
Lafite is the northernmost of the Pauillac First Growths, a Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard running up to the Saint-Estèphe boundary, and the most restrained of the five — perfume, cedar, fine-grained tannin, weight held back rather than pushed forward. Éric de Rothschild had taken charge in 1974 and spent the late seventies and early eighties rebuilding an estate that had drifted; 1981 sits on that upward curve.
The vintage was good rather than exceptional: warm summer, harvest rain, wines of moderate depth and considerable elegance. From Lafite that combination has aged unusually well, and this is one of the most recognisable names in wine attached to a specific year.

Where it is likely to be now. With a neck-level fill this has every chance of still being a live, fragrant wine, though it is fully mature and there is no argument for holding it any longer.
Who it suits. The bottle for a 45th birthday or a sapphire wedding anniversary in 2026 when the year needs to be marked with a name that carries weight across the table.
Condition. There is light cellar staining and very slight damage to the label, and the fill is into the neck — the highest level recorded for a wine of this age.
