This is Lagrange from just before everything changed. The Cendoya family, Spanish owners since 1925, sold the estate to Suntory in 1983. What the new owners found was one of the largest classified vineyards in the Médoc in a state of near-collapse, and what followed was one of Bordeaux's most thorough restorations. A 1981 comes from the old, worn-out Lagrange, and that is part of what makes it interesting.
1981 itself was a decent Saint-Julien year: a warm summer, rain arriving during the harvest, and wines that came out medium-bodied, cedary and correct rather than powerful. They matured comparatively early and the better ones have held.
Forty-five years on, this is a Third Growth from a named commune with a legible label and a fill that has barely moved — bought, above all, for the number printed on it.

Where it is likely to be now. A pre-restoration Lagrange from a medium-weight year is at the very end of the road: likely soft, dried and tertiary if sound at all, so this is sold as a collectible bottle rather than a promise.
Who it suits. A natural pick for a 45th birthday in 2026, or for a couple reaching their sapphire anniversary, where a Third Growth Saint-Julien lands well without straining the budget.
Condition. The label shows very slight cellar staining and the fill is at very top shoulder, both entirely normal for a claret that has spent forty-five years underground.
