The label on this bottle is by Hans Hartung, the German-born abstract painter, one in the sequence Baron Philippe de Rothschild commissioned from a different artist every year from 1945 onwards. It is part of why Mouton bottles get collected as objects as much as wine.
Mouton was promoted to First Growth in 1973, the only change ever made to the 1855 classification, after decades of the Baron's campaigning. The vineyard is Cabernet Sauvignon at its most emphatic — deep gravel on the northern edge of Pauillac, giving the cassis-and-graphite weight the estate is known for.
1979 was a big, cool, late-picked Médoc vintage: classical rather than opulent, and one the top estates carried a very long way. A Mouton of this age is one of the few bottles a non-collector will recognise on sight, which counts for something when the wine is a present.

Where it is likely to be now. Top-flight Pauillac from 1979 can still be drinking well, and Mouton is among the wines most likely to be holding, though at forty-seven it is mature and should be handled gently.
