1961 is the most famous red Bordeaux vintage of the last century, and the reason is arithmetic. Frost and a cold, wet flowering in June destroyed much of the crop before it had set. What survived then ripened through a hot, rainless summer with almost no fruit per vine to feed. The result was a tiny harvest of extraordinarily concentrated wine.
Fombrauge is one of the older estates in Saint-Émilion, out at Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes on the plateau east of the town, and wine has been made there since the sixteenth century. It is not a classed growth and never has been, which is precisely why a bottle from the century's most sought-after vintage is available here for under two hundred euro rather than several thousand.
Bottles of 1961 at this price are uncommon not because the wine is doubtful but because the estate was unfashionable when it was sold and nobody speculated on it. It is offered as a collectible from a year Bordeaux has never quite repeated.

Where it is likely to be now. A modest Right Bank estate at sixty-five years is likely to be delicate at best, and while the fill here is encouraging, the bottle is sold without a guarantee of drinkability.
Who it suits. The straightforward way to put the most celebrated year in Bordeaux into the hands of someone turning sixty-five in 2026, without a four-figure price.
Condition. The label is slightly marked from cellar storage and the wine sits between top shoulder and the base of the neck, which is a good fill for a bottle of this age.
