Trimoulet has been in the hands of the Jean family for generations, on the sandier, gravelly ground north-east of Saint-Émilion towards Saint-Georges. It was a classified Grand Cru Classé at the time this wine was made, and it has never been a fashionable name — which is precisely why a classed growth from the most celebrated Bordeaux vintage of the modern era can still be bought for a couple of hundred euro.
1982 is the year that changed Bordeaux. A hot, early, almost tropical summer produced ripeness the region had not seen in a generation, and the effect reached far past the first growths: modest estates made wines with a depth and sweetness of fruit that were entirely new to them. On Saint-Émilion's Merlot-dominated soils the results were rich and generous.
Forty-four years on, a bottle like this is fully resolved — dried fruit, leather, forest floor — and it carries the year itself, which for most buyers is the reason it is being given.
