Among people who drink Bordeaux rather than trade it, Grand-Puy-Lacoste has a specific reputation: the Pauillac you buy when you want the flavour of the commune — cassis, cedar, graphite, firm tannin — without paying First Growth money for it. Around three-quarters Cabernet Sauvignon, grown on a gravel rise a little inland from the estuary, and made by the Borie family since 1978.

1981 followed a warm summer and was diluted a little by rain during the harvest. The result across the Médoc was a vintage of medium weight and good structure that has aged steadily rather than dramatically, and Grand-Puy-Lacoste's tannic frame suited that kind of year.

Forty-five years in, a bottle like this one — Fifth Growth, single estate, level still high in the shoulder — is a real object. It tends to end up standing on a shelf long after the evening it was opened.

  • Producer: Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste

Where it is likely to be now. Of the wines from this vintage this is one of the more likely to still be holding, but it is mature and any remaining tannin will now be dry rather than firm.

Who it suits. A strong 45th birthday or sapphire anniversary gift in 2026 for a recipient who actually opens their wine and will recognise the estate's name.

Condition. The label is slightly damaged, which is common after decades in a cellar, while the fill sits between very top shoulder and bottom neck — the part that genuinely matters.

Provenance. Bought to order from a professional European merchant. We check fill, label and capsule when the bottle reaches us and photograph it before it ships.

Delivered in 7 to 10 working days, tracked. Transit cover can be added at checkout.

Sold as a collectible item, as seen. No guarantee is given on drinkability.
