The Cazes family have run Lynch-Bages out of the hamlet of Bages, on the plateau above Pauillac, since the 1930s, and by the mid-1970s Jean-Michel Cazes was taking over from his father. The estate became one of the most widely loved names in the Médoc — a Fifth Growth that people open and drink rather than simply collect.
1976 was the year of the great European heatwave. Bordeaux baked through a record summer, then rain arrived in September and swelled the grapes just before picking. The wines came out ripe, generous and soft, and they matured fast. That made 1976 a poor year for laying down and a very good one for drinking early, which is exactly why intact bottles are now thin on the ground.
This one has kept a strong fill, which in a fifty-year-old claret tells you more than anything printed on the label.

Where it is likely to be now. An early-maturing vintage, so at fifty this has shed most of its fruit and should be judged as a savoury old claret — the high fill here is the best evidence that the cork has done its job.
Who it suits. The obvious bottle for a fiftieth birthday in 2026, or for a couple reaching their golden wedding anniversary.
Condition. The label is very slightly marked from bin storage, and the wine sits between very top shoulder and base of neck — an unusually good fill for a 1976, and a sign the cork has held.
Provenance. Bought to order from a professional European merchant. We check fill, label and capsule when the bottle reaches us and photograph it before it ships.
Delivered in 7 to 10 working days, tracked. Transit cover can be added at checkout.
Sold as a collectible item, as seen. No guarantee is given on drinkability.
