Croizet-Bages owns vines in very good company — the Bages plateau south of Pauillac village, a stretch of deep gravel it shares with Lynch-Bages and Grand-Puy-Lacoste — and has spent most of the last century as the quietest name on it. The Quié family have held the estate since 1942, and the wine has always been made in a restrained, old-fashioned Pauillac idiom: Cabernet Sauvignon-led, firm, unshowy.
1979 gave Bordeaux a very large crop in a cool, late season. The wines were dismissed at first for lacking the flesh of 1978, then spent the following twenty years proving they had the frame to keep going.
At this age a Fifth Growth like this is bought for what it is rather than what it scores: a genuine classified-growth Pauillac from one specific autumn, with the year printed on the label.

Where it is likely to be now. Croizet-Bages is not one of the great keepers, so at forty-seven this is likely to be delicate and tertiary — dried fruit, leather, tobacco — and best opened soon rather than kept on.
Who it suits. A sensible way to give a real classified Pauillac to someone turning 47 in 2026 without spending First Growth money on the gesture.
Condition. The label shows very minor damage and light cellar staining, and the fill sits between very top shoulder and bottom neck, which is strong for a wine of this age.
Provenance. Bought to order from a professional European merchant. We check fill, label and capsule when the bottle reaches us and photograph it before it ships.
