In 1981 this wine was still labelled Château L'Angélus — the definite article was dropped at the end of the decade — and the estate was a respected Grand Cru Classé rather than the name that would later reach the top of Saint-Émilion's classification. The vineyard runs across the amphitheatre of south-facing slopes below the town, clay and sand over limestone, planted heavily to Merlot with an unusually high share of Cabernet Franc.
1981 was a cooler, classically proportioned year in Saint-Émilion, and it has spent its whole life overshadowed by the vintage that came next. The wines were medium-weight and built for twenty or thirty years. This one has had forty-five, so the fruit will have turned savoury: dried fig, tobacco leaf, undergrowth, tannins gone soft.
What you are buying is one specific autumn on one specific hillside, bottled in 1983 and untouched since. For a gift tied to a year, that is the whole point.
