Of all the 1975s, the Graves are the ones that came good. The vintage is notorious: a hot, dry summer, a small crop and tannins so hard that many Médocs never found their balance. At Haut-Brion, on the deep gravel banks at Pessac, the wine had the flesh to carry that structure, and the 1975 has long been counted among the better bottles of a punishing year.
Haut-Brion is the oldest of the great Bordeaux names, sold under its own label in London by the 1660s and the only estate outside the Médoc placed among the first growths in 1855. Its vineyard is now an island inside the suburbs of Bordeaux, walled in by houses and a tram line, which is part of what makes the wine feel like a survivor before you even reach the year on the label.
The fill here is at base of neck, which after fifty-one years is about the strongest signal a cork can give.

Condition. Almost no cellar marking on the label and a fill right up at the base of the neck: as good as condition gets at this age.
