An Indian summer saved Bordeaux

A poor summer turned into a long, dry, golden autumn, and Bordeaux made classic, fresh wines - the Médoc and Saint-Estèphe especially - with excellent dry whites and Sauternes. White Burgundy 2014 is outstanding, the reds pretty and early. Champagne is good. Italy had a wet, difficult year: Piedmont and Tuscany suffered, though Barbaresco fared better than Barolo.

White Burgundy 2014 is one of the best white vintages of the decade and a fine twelfth-birthday bottle to open now. For red, a Médoc 2014 is classic, fairly priced and will keep for another decade. Avoid Tuscany from this year.

In July Germany beat Argentina to win the World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. In November the Philae lander touched down on a comet, three hundred million miles from Earth.

  • White Burgundy 2014 - one of the great white vintages of the decade
  • Médoc or Saint-Estèphe 2014 - classic, fresh Bordeaux
  • Sauternes 2014 - rich and balanced
  • Vintage Champagne 2014 - a good, honest year
