Of all the Bordeaux vintages of the 1960s, 1966 is the one the trade still speaks well of. A dry, late summer gave firm, tannic wines that took twenty years to open and then held their shape for decades, which is the opposite of the soft, early-drinking years on either side of it.
Léoville Poyferré is one third of the old Léoville estate, broken up after the Revolution and shared today with Las Cases and Barton. It has belonged to the Cuvelier family since 1920. The vineyard runs along the Saint-Julien plateau towards the Pauillac boundary, and the wine has always carried more flesh than its two siblings: Cabernet-led, but with the Merlot weight these soils allow.
Sixty years is a long time for cork and glass to hold together. A 1966 that is still sound is a proper vintage with a good date attached, rather than a poor wine rescued by its year.
