Haut-Brion is the oldest of the great Bordeaux names and the only estate outside the Médoc admitted to the first growths in 1855. Its vineyard is now surrounded by the suburbs of Bordeaux at Pessac; in 1982 the appellation on the label was still simply Graves, since Pessac-Léognan was not created until 1987. The deep gravel there gives the wine a signature nobody mistakes: warm, smoky, tobacco and scorched earth beneath the fruit.
1982 is the vintage that made the modern market for Bordeaux, and Haut-Brion produced one of the wines of its decade — dense, sweet-fruited, and, less usual for the year, still standing squarely on its feet after four decades. Jean-Bernard Delmas was in charge, and the wine has aged with more composure than several of its more celebrated neighbours.
A bottle at this level is a serious object. Stand it upright for two days, decant it slowly off the sediment, and give it to somebody who will understand what year they are holding.

Where it is likely to be now. Of everything in this vintage, well-kept Haut-Brion is among the likeliest to still be complete rather than fading, though as a pre-1990 bottle it is sold as a collectible item without a guarantee of drinkability.
Who it suits. The bottle for a landmark 1982 gift — a forty-fourth birthday or anniversary in 2026 where the point is to hand over something genuinely important.
